Percentage Shot In Basketball!
The New Zealand Herald recently ran this story and video:
"In the wacky world of trick shots, this magnificent effort reigns supreme.
Trick shot collective How Ridiculous travelled to Rotterdam this week to throw a basketball off a 96m viewing deck at the top of the Euromast and into a hoop below on the ground.
And on their 62nd attempt they made it."
What percentage would best describe their success? Remember to share your thinking, not just an answer.

Pick A Partner And A Problem!
Partner up with a friend and see how many of these decimal problems you can make sense of. Remember that your thinking is much more important than an answer.
1. A water pitcher weighs 0.64 kg when empty and 1.728 kg when filled with water. How much does the water weigh?
2. A cyclist has travelled 145.8 km in the first stage of a race, 136.65 km in the second stage and 162.62 km in the third. How many km must the cyclist still complete if the entire race is 1000 km in length?
3. In a well filled with water, 184.5 litres are remove followed by 128.75 litres and finally 84.5 litres. After these withdrawals, there are 160 litres in the well. How much water did the well originally have?
4. There are 240 boxes with 25 bags of coffee each. If each bag wighs 0.62 kg, what is the total weight of all the coffee?
5. Knowing that 2.077m3 air weighs 2.7 kg, calculate how much 1m3 of air weighs.
6. Eva is on a diet which states that she cannot consume more than 600 calories in one meal. Yesterday she had lunch: 125 g of bread, 140 g of asparagus, 45 g of cheese and an apple of 130 g. If 1 g of bread has 3.3 calories, 1 g of asparagus, 0.32 calories, 1 g of cheese, 1.2 calories and 1 g of an apple has 0.52 calories. Did Eva follow her diet?

Decimal Game
Check out this decimal game. We played it a couple of different ways. In the first game we played so that the first person to add their scores to 1 were the winner. In the second, we played so that the last person to get to 1 was the winner. If you use three dice, you will be able to use thousandths too. Have some fun learning about decimals.

Running Math
Students in Room 22 run daily as part of an exercise training program. On Monday they ran 3.6 km, on Tuesday 1.2 km, on Wednesday 2.4 km, on Thursday 3.6 km and on Friday 1.17km. How many kilometers did they run this week? If they kept up this training schedule, how many months before they would have ran a total distance of 500 km?
Remember to share your thinking, not just an answer.

Walking Maths
Frank either walks to school and catches the bus home or catches the bus to school and walks home. Both ways, it takes him 1 hour to travel to and from school. If he were to walk to and from school, it would take him 1 1/2 hours. If Frank were to catch the bus to and from school, how long would it take him? |

Will.i.am Visited Us Today!
TV NZ Entertainment featured a headline this afternoon that read "Will.i.am donates $100,000 to NZ children's trust" The New Zealand Herald, headlined their Entertainment section with "Will.i.am donates $100k to low-decile NZ schools" The herald went on to say "The US singer, songwriter and producer who rose to fame as a member of the Black Eyed Peas, was brought to New Zealand for a private show last night. (Here's the part that got us all excited today) The star made a surprise appearance at Point England Primary School (that's us!) in east Auckland this afternoon where he presented a $100,000 cheque to digital literacy charity the Manaiakalani Education Trust." full story here
That's right, we were the lucky recipients of his kind gesture and were incredibly excited to have him as a guest, not only in our school, but as a visitor to our classroom. He checked in on our class to see what we were up to. This has truly been a day to remember.

Parking Problems!
This is a quote from a story that ran recently in the Howick and Pakuranga Times newspaper.
It was a shock when in January a $150 fine turned up in the mail for stopping for 46 seconds in a mobility space.
“It’s ridiculous. It’s the most expensive 46 seconds I can imagine,” Jessie says.
At this rate, how much did it cost for every second she was parked in this mobility space?
At this same rate, how much would it have cost her to listen to your favourite song while parked in this forbidden space?

We Are Off To A Great Start!
The year is off and running and we are all off to a flying start. Room 22 is loaded (33 students) with amazing and talented students and the first two weeks have literally flown by. Our topic for Term 1 is "The Point England Way" and the question that we are investigating is "How Can The 3 P's (Participation, Partnership and Protection) Help Me To Achieve?" Please feel free to check in with us often to see what our terrific crew have been learning.
