The Test

This movie is Room 18's entry into the 2012 Manaiakalani Film Festival. Inspired by Tama Tu, a film written and directed by Taika Waititi in 2004, we set out to see what this concept (silent communication) could look like for us. After looking at several scenarios that were often related to necessary silence, we decided that we would like to fashion our script around a test. Prior to filming, we storyboarded the entire 1 minute, 32 second youtube clip of Tama Tu. 38 scenes later, we soon saw that this was a challenging project. It involved the entire class with everyone acting. We truly hope that you enjoy our efforts.

  3. Hi Room 18

This was one of my favourites at the film festival today. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I thought that it was a very clever and interesting movie because it didn't involve any dialogue and yet the message (via silent communication) was very clear. Thanks for providing a link to 'Tama Tu' and the source of your inspiration for your movie. Great acting from Starford, Raihan and the rest of your cool class.

It was hard case when that naughty guy does his pukana, then the teacher eyeballs him and suddenly he's all arms crossed like "what, I'm being good". But I was a bit nervouse about the scary teacher because the clock stopped ticking and it made me hold my breath...

Room 18, you guys are legends! 'The Test' was by far my favourite Manaiakalani Festival Movie this year. I laughed so much that I cried (I also watched it over and over again) - some pretty mean pukana eyes in there.

I loved how you made Tama Tu your own and a test situation was PERFECT. Mr Barks suited being the Commander too hehehe. I would've struggled to find a way to capture the same essence of Tama Tu but you guys nailed it. Awesome! Hard act to follow for next year though... I look forward to it!

Miss you guys and hope you are all doing your best for your very cool teacher Mr Barks.

It made me laugh because the teacher did not know that you had silly faces .Your movie the test is really funny I like your movie room 18. In the test you could not talk and it reminded me of when I had a test and I could not talk. I liked how it was silent because you can think of what the answer is,but you guys were not thinking about the answer you were being silly that made me laugh. This is all I like about The Test.

It was effective that you filmed it with black and white because it made me imagine when I’m being quiet when I’m doing tests in my class. The teacher was a strict character and it was funny that the teacher didn’t notice anything. I look forward to seeing your next film.
